cookin on the coals

Dante and Luke put a fire pit in our newly reclaimed corner of our backyard because D's been dying to cook on the fire again. So we got the coals nice and hot, and while the fire raged, we chopped carrots, celery, onion and garlic, doused that with olive oil, s&p, basil, oregano and curry. I'd made focaccia dough earlier, so we cut up that dough and wrapped it around sticks to have bannocks. Mmmm, warm bannock slathered with butter and jam... eventually I took the veggie mix (which we'd cooked in a cast iron skilled) and wrapped it inside a flat round of dough to make veggie "pies". yum. oh, and we sauteed the broccoli rabe from the garden in the skillet before the focaccia and veggie pies.

In fear of losing some eyebrows/lashes, the kids won't face the fire.
We put the younger set of chicks out in the garden. Tinkerebelle enjoys the freedom.

Izzy and Clover take a snooze near the fennel and peas.

Lucia and her main "squeeze" Peepers. Good things these chicks aren't too delicate.
